WHO WE ARE
The Color Movement is a co-creation between Catholic Sisters, Alight (formerly American Refugee Committee), and Sisters Rising Worldwide. Weaving together our strengths, we work to amplify and sustain the work of the Sisters as they spark change and save lives in some of the toughest communities out there.
Catholic Sisters are our guiding stars. Our work is to help unite them under our colorful, joyful movement, bring them the support their communities need to thrive, and share the stories of these incredible women and their communities with the wider world.
WHY CATHOLIC SISTERS?
Alight is non-sectarian. But we know incredible humanitarians when we see them, and Catholic Sisters wrote the book. When we first began to partner with Sisters Rising Worldwide in Latin America, we saw firsthand the unique position that Sisters hold in the communities they serve – as trusted, beloved, human-centered, and critical providers. But what we also saw was that, perhaps surprisingly, they were often severely under-resourced and unconnected from each other. We thought we could help change that.
This millennium-old women’s organization is still bursting with fierce and dedicated humanitarians, facing down issues like gang violence, human trafficking, support to families on the move, family separation, coronavirus prevention and response, and so much more. But they need help. Now we’re standing alongside this Sisterhood, tailoring our support to meet their needs and collaborating to help their impact grow.
HOW IT ALL BEGAN
Our work with Sisters Rising Worldwide first took root in El Salvador and then along the U.S.-Mexico border, where we found that Sisters were some of the most impactful, inspiring, and beloved members of the community, making change day in and day out. The Sisters in El Salvador offer an alternative identity to a life of violence, one that thrives on goodness, peace and unity. And the Sisters on the border act as first-responders and frontline humanitarians, helping families survive some of the darkest times of their lives.
Through increased support and collaboration from the Color Movement, we’re putting more resources into the Sisters’ hands, strengthening their work in El Salvador and at the border. But that’s just the beginning. Our movement is going global, responding to the coronavirus around the globe, and getting behind Sisters who are helping to keep their communities safe.
